Born in Geneva in 1978, Sarah Girard commenced her art studies at the local Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (HEAD) in 2001. She then went on to complete her Master (majoring in photography) in Visual Arts at Goldsmiths College in London, in 2003. The same year, she showed her series of photographs City Actions part 2 at Blancpain Stepczynski Gallery in Geneva, and at the Brunswick Centre in London. In 2004, she received a grant from the Arts Council of England, for her combined photographic and workshop project Documentary Compositions.
In 2006, Girard participated in the exhibition Mémoire et Oubli at the Villa Bernasconi and in the group show I and Me at Studio Voltaire gallery, in London
In 2007, she was shown at the 11th edition of Journées photographiques in Bienne, Switzerland, and in 2008 she was a prize winner at the Festival of Photography F-Stop in Leipzig for her series Rémanence.
2009 has been a prolific year for Girard. The artist exhibited her series Cabinets in Geneva’s Art en Ile in March, followed by her participation in the group photographic show Urban Reflections at The Art Floor, curated by Sascha Gianella, in May. Girard published and released the book Saveurs Partagées, in collaboration with art historian Séverine Fromaigeat and the support of the commune of Plan-les-Ouates, which received substantial media attention.
Sarah Girard also had the solo exhibition Rémanence that be held at the gallery TH13 in Bern in 2009. She presented works from her series of photographs taken in the rooms of selected psychoanalysts based in Geneva over a three year period. Girard extends her previous study of Cabinets whereby she observes, constructs and photographs fragments of her environment, creating compositions that are marked by absence yet at the same time urge us to stop and consider them.
Her works are included in the FMAC collection of the City of Geneva and the collection of the City of Lancy, amongst other private collections throughout Europe.
Girard is currently working on a new series of photographs of urban landscapes taken in Japan called Reading Japan. Through this series of photographs, like in her previous series, she tries to decrypt the environment in which we live in a subtle and engaging way.
Sarah Girard currently lives and works in Geneva, Switzerland, where she teaches photography and art part-time and organises workshops. She is also a member of the Comité of Centre de la Photographie Genève www.centrephotogeneve.ch

Sarah Girard a obtenu le prix du festival de photographie F-Stop de Leipzig en 2008.
